Birds Injured Rehabilitated & Orphaned Association Incorporated (trading as B.I.R.O.) is a non-profit organisation staffed by volunteers and operates mainly in the south east corner of Queensland from Gympie to the NSW border, and west to Toowoomba. B.I.R.O. was formed in March 1993 and has steadily grown in membership to over 100 wildlife carers who have dedicated their time and skills to look after the needs of Australian native birds. It was felt at the time that there were a lot of organisations looking after most of the native wildlife and birds were being neglected. So after a few hours discussion B.I.R.O. was formed. The objectives of B.I.R.O are:- (1) To ensure that all birds needing help will find help by carers who will do their best to assist the bird by treating their injuries, rehabilitate them and if possible return them to the wild. (2) To support all members with any information they may need when they receive an injured/sick bird i.e. formulas on what the bird eats and the type of care it may require and to train them in the rehabilitation process for the bird. (3) To work with and support our local vets, who sometimes receive these birds from the general public and need someone to take the bird for rehabilitation and finally release after they have treated them . (4) To educate the public on the everyday life of birds and how they are trying to live with us in suburbia, understanding their daily routine and what they eat etc. will make us appreciate them more than we do. (5) To set up a network of carers in the metropolitan area and surrounding areas so injured birds can get treatment and care as quickly as possible. (6) To gather statistical information on the species injured, where they were found, what injuries they suffered, whether they were victims of cats, dogs, cars, other birds, sick or poisoned etc. (7) It is hoped that as years go by our group will grow even bigger in carer numbers and we will be able to service the community more efficiently , so if you think you would like to become a wildlife carer and help look after our wonderful native species of BIRDS , we would love to hear from you as it can be a very rewarding thing to do .
